LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE of First Dates was a decent night for representation.

For the first time ever, we saw a transgender dater and the show highlighted a number of other important topics.

Viewers couldn’t bear how cute the first couple on the show were.

Customer service worker Kerrie and phone salesman Aaron were incredibly smiley.

Their smiles were contagious.

After Kerrie and Aaron, we were finally introduced to the show’s first transgender dater – Laylah.

Since taking part on First Dates, she has legally changed her name to Laylah. She spoke about the challenges that transgender people face in their day to day life.

I definitely have more challenges than your average person. People on the street staring, shouting. There’s a lot of people who I think hate me and it’s very weird to have someone hate you for no reason.

When asked if she could change one thing about her life, Laylah responded:

I’d change society. I know a lot of people would expect me to say that I’d change the fact that I was born male, but I think the problem doesn’t start with you as an individual. I think everyone has the right to be who they are, but I would change the way people look at me.

Laylah was paired up with Kyle from Cork.

Kyle spoke about his sexuality. As someone who’s pansexual, he’s not attracted to anybody based on their gender. Instead, he’s attracted to anybody he clicks with, whether they identify as male, female, trans, non-binary or anything else.

Kyle and Laylah were equally as nervous about their first blind date, but they immediately began to bond about their interest in music. Once they got seated, the conversation turned to Laylah’s gender.

They both enjoyed the experience but decided it was best to carry on as friends in the end.
